Seminar in Karpen HallMLA students are strongly encouraged to participate in professional academic conferences both to fulfill the University’s degree requirement of “Oral Competency,” and to experience the intellectual growth such activities provide. Similarly, we encourage students to participate in community-related activities and Study Abroad opportunities related to their academic program.

2011 Graduate Liberal Studies Conference at UNC Asheville

The Master of Liberal Arts Program at the University of North Carolina at Asheville invites you to submit proposals for the 2011 Regional Graduate Liberal Studies Conference to be held April 8-9, 2011, on the UNC Asheville campus. This conference offers an excellent opportunity to present your academic work to an audience of your GLS colleagues as well as to members of the community at large.  Read more about the 2011 GLS Conference.

MLA Capstone Project Presentations

In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Liberal Arts, candidates will present their Capstone Projects on December 3 and December 10, 2010.

2011 Queer Studies Conference at UNC Asheville

This year's conference theme is Queer as an Active Verb. The Conference will be held March 31 through April 2, 2011.

The UNC Asheville Queer Studies conference is dedicated to the investigation of genders and sexualities. All GLBTQ-related proposals will be considered. We welcome a range of approaches and participants, including faculty, community members, graduate and undergraduate students. All formats will be considered, including paper presentations (15 minutes), panels (60 to 75 minutes), workshops, readings, exhibitions, film screenings and performances. Paper presentations will be organized into groups of 3 to 4 papers. Please e-mail Dr. Amy Lanou at alanou@unca.edu to request the "call for papers" packet.
